Blake Nichols Sandy
Feb. 5, 1961-Aug. 20, 2026
Portola Valley, California
Blake Nichols Sandy, 65, passed away on August 20, 2026 after a courageous battle with cancer. He lived his life to the fullest and would want his life remembered as a celebration of the opportunities we are given to make life extraordinary.
Blake was born on February 5, 1961, at Stanford Hospital to Elmer Hugh and Norma Jean Sandy. He grew up in Ladera (now Portola Valley), California, where he enjoyed an idyllic childhood spent playing in the streets after dark, riding his bike to the community pool, and making his way to school with friends. Blake attended Woodside High School and San Diego State.
He had a quick wit and curious mind, and especially enjoyed a good debate - often taking the opposing view simply to challenge assumptions and provoke new thoughts. Blake loved music, travel, and saw life as a journey. He hiked the Camino de Santiago, fulfilled a dream of attending a World Cup soccer match, and was learning to play the piano. He was also a devoted Led Zeppelin fan and could often be counted on for an appropriate quote.
Blake shared a particularly meaningful bond with a brother and sister in Mexico, whom he supported and remained close to from their childhood throughout their adult lives today. He believed deeply in giving to others and found that helping those less fortunate brought him more satisfaction than material things ever could.
Blake is survived by his sister, two nephews, and many friends and neighbors who knew and loved him.
