Dr. C. Peter Rosenbaum, 76, a professor emeritus at Stanford University, died Sept. 17.

He was born in New York City, N.Y., and grew up in Winnetka, Ill. He graduated from New Trier High School and Haverford College. He graduated from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine in 1956.

He was an expert in the study and treatment of schizophrenia. He developed this interest during his two-year fellowship at the National Institute of Mental Health, when he worked under Dr. Dave Hamburg, who recruited him to the faculty of Stanford Medical School in 1961. Before going to NIMH, he completed an internship at Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco and a year of psychiatric residency at the Palo Alto VA.

At Stanford he was Director of the Adult Psychiatry Clinic, Director of the Psychiatry Resident Training Program and a member of the Medical School Admission Committee. He was twice awarded "Best Teacher" by graduating psychiatry residents.

He had a long association with and enthusiasm for Italy. He twice received Fulbright Scholarships to lecture at Italian universities and also taught there with the Stanford-in-Italy program.

The American Psychiatric Association elected him to be a Distinguished Life Fellow in recognition of the significant contributions he made to psychiatry. He published many books and articles, in both English and Italian.

He was also a herpetologist. His favorite reptiles were box turtles, king snakes and chameleons. In addition, he was a butterfly enthusiast and enjoyed working with home computers.

He is survived by his wife, Eva of Menlo Park; son, David of Redwood City; daughter, Sarah of San Jose; brother, Edward Rosenbaum of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; and four grandchildren.
