Donald John Roberts—known simply as John to those who loved him—passed away peacefully at home on January 23, 2026. He faced a long illness with the same quiet strength and dignity that defined his eighty years, surrounded in his final moments by the family and friends who meant the world to him.

John’s story began in Winnipeg on February 11, 1945. The son of Margaret and Donald V. Roberts, he grew up with a boundless curiosity that would eventually take him across the globe. Though his academic path led him to the University of Minnesota for his PhD and later to the heights of Stanford University, he never lost his Canadian roots or his connection to the family that shaped him.

John was a titan of economics—a world-renowned professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business whose books and theories changed the way we understand how companies actually work. But to his students and colleagues, he was much more than a list of accolades. While he could sometimes seem stern—the result of a brilliant mind that never stopped moving—that first impression was always a gateway to a man of immense warmth and a truly jovial spirit.

He was the mentor who help his doctoral students find their voice and the colleague who was always the most generous with his ideas. He didn't just teach economics; he championed the next generation.

If you wanted to see the true John Roberts, you had to see him in the kitchen. A chef of extraordinary talent, John expressed his love through food. His legendary parties were the heartbeat of his social life, and his cassoulet was more than a meal—it was an event.

He moved through life with a hunger for experience, visiting 65 countries and all seven continents. Whether he was at a research institute in Jerusalem or a college in Oxford, he brought back stories, flavors, and friendships that lasted a lifetime.

John’s greatest devotion was to his family. He was a beloved husband to Jayne Lange, a guiding light to his stepdaughters, Julia and Sarah, and loving grandfather to his granddaughter Mabel. He carried the memories of his first wife, Kathy, and his stepson, Joshua, with him always. He is also survived by his siblings Gordon, Douglas, and Barbara, and a close-knit circle of nieces and nephews.

John was a man of remarkable ingenuity, integrity, intelligence and wit, but it is his devotion—to his work, his friends, and his family—that we will miss the most.

We will gather to remember John at Stanford on May 8 2026. For those who wish to attend either virtually or in person, please visit his memorial website, https://everloved.com/life-of/donald-roberts/ or reach out to his family at johnbizprof@gmail.com.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, please make a contribution in John’s name to your favorite charity.

We miss him dearly, but we carry his warmth with us.
