Donald Thane Eikenberry
Nov. 4, 1923-April 28, 2013
Redwood City, California

Donald Thane Eikenberry passed away peacefully at home at the age of 89. He was born in Minnesota, came to California in 1926 along with his brother Warren, and was raised in Modesto.

He graduated from Stanford University in 1948 and from the Stanford Medical School in 1953 with specialty training in Internal Medicine. He was a partner of the Permanente Medical Group until his retirement in 1986, after having spent most of his career taking care of patients at Kaiser Hospital in South San Francisco. He was a caring, kind and compassionate physician who always put the patient first.

He was an active member of the San Mateo County Medical Society. His patients and his colleagues had been an integral part of his life for all those years.

His life had many chapters. He was active in the Church of the Brethren in Modesto, then after moving to the Bay Area joined the Episcopal churches of Holy Trinity and St. Bede?s, both in Menlo Park.

An avid musician, he played cello as a youth, and later sang in the church choirs, performing in a variety of musical events, including a trip to England with the St. Bede?s Choral Society. He was a leader in the church vestry, at the youth Bread Camp, active in the ?Sunday Nighters? club at the church and participated in and helped cook for a number of Cursillo retreats.

Don was active with, first, the Indian Guides, then the Boy Scouts of America Troop 206 in Menlo Park for years. He was "Camp Doctor" at Twin Lakes years ago, then later on at Camp Emerald Bay on the Catalina Island.

He enjoyed traveling with his wife and often family too, via motor home, airplane and/or cruising on the open seas. He loved working in his garden, and grew an amazing patch of pumpkins along with chard and zucchini every year. He even dried his own apricots out in the sun!

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Margaret (Miki). He will be lovingly remembered in the hearts of his four children Shirley Lesure (Wynn) of Phoenix, Carl (Trudy) of Fremont, Eric (Barb) of Wisconsin, and Lisa Jewett (Michael) of Palo Alto, and his 6 grandchildren, Marie, Chris, Amy, Anthony, Andy and Stuart. He was preceded in death by his beloved brother Warren, and survived by his sisters Shirley Bowman and Helen Fullmer. As he has requested, his ashes will be interned in the Trinity Memorial Garden.

Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 2 PM at Trinity Church in Menlo Park, 330 Ravenswood Avenue, 94025.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Trinity Church Music Fund (same address) to honor this long time chorister would be gratefully appreciated.
