Frank Meagher
1922-Dec. 19, 2008
Palo Alto, California

Frank "Buzz" Meagher, 86, a longtime resident of Palo Alto, died of cancer Dec. 19.

A native of San Francisco, he raised a family of five in Palo Alto and lived with his daughter in his final months.

His life took him from playing tennis against Wimbledon champion Bobby Brown as a schoolboy to serving his country during World War II in the Pacific, to playing baseball with Jackie Robinson and teaching school at San Quentin. An alumnus of Santa Clara University, and a member of their hall of fame, he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers and played with the likes of Gil Hodges and Roy Campanella in the organization until an arm injury forced his retirement.

He became a real estate professional, selling both residential and commercial property as well as developing his own projects.

He was well known among his friends and family for telling stories and for making people laugh. An avid reader, he also counted golf and fishing among his hobbies.

He is survived by his children, John Meagher (wife Meredith) of Boise, Idaho, Julie Meagher of Palo Alto, Jim Meagher (wife Kathy) of Missoula, Mont., Bill Meagher (wife Cindy) of San Rafael, and Katie Zabel (husband Steve) of Firth, Neb.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
