Karl Handwerk
Nov. 27, 1937-Jan. 13, 2021
Woodside, California

Karl was born in Nuremberg, Germany and passed away in Woodside, California due to complications from a fall. Karl was born to Katharina Saupert and Johannes Handwerk of Koln, Germany both parents preceded him in death. Karl married his late wife, Gertraud in Germany before moving to the United States, first in New York and later after a few other stops settling in Woodside where he lived for 54 years.

Karl was an apprentice at Le Meridien Grand Hotel Nuremberg where he learned the tools of his trade in Hotel and Restaurant Management. After moving to New York, he worked at the Waldorf Astoria, then at the Grand Hotel in Texas before moving to Woodside where he opened his own restaurant, Barbarossa, from which he later retired.

Karl’s greatest love was taking walks with his beloved dog, Casey. They hiked along the many trails in Woodside and in the Glen’s where all the neighbors knew them well. He always said, “Life is not a race, life should be a stroll in the park.” Karl was nicknamed “The Mayor of the Woodside Glens”. He enjoyed going to Half Moon Bay and listening to the ocean from the window of the local eateries. He loved a good meal!

He leaves to cherish his memories: his two daughters, Ellen Bailey of Tracy, CA and Brigitte Roay of Belmont, CA. His grandchildren: Micheal, Patrick & Danielle Bailey, Audrey Roay Vargas and Alyson Roay Harvey. His great grandchildren: Makenzie, Harmonee-lilli, Maison, Riece, Donovan, Dameon, Amelia and Aiden.
