Robert Lawrence Queen
Oct. 28, 1922-July 27, 2011
Mountain View, California
On July 27, 2011, Lawrence left this earth and was reunited with his bride, Helen Verbarg Queen.
Lawrence (Larry) was born on Oct. 28, 1922, to Russell and Birdie Queen. He left Missouri to serve his country during WWII. Working as an Army Corpsman, he met his new boss, a beautiful Army nurse and his future wife, Helen.
Lawrence was sent overseas to serve in Belgium, Holland, France and Germany, but their love grew despite the distance. Finally, Feb. 15, 1946, they were married and later that year they purchased their home in Palo Alto, residing there until Helen's death in 2005.
Lawrence worked many years for Palo Alto Unified School District. His big heart, dedication and hard work were honored when he was chosen "teacher" of the year at Jordan Middle School, even though he was the school custodian.
Lawrence was a strong, yet soft-hearted, creative, quick witted, tenacious, generous and loving gentleman that will be missed.
Lawrence and Helen were married for 59 years, completely devoted to each other. They had no children, but invested their lives and shared their love generously with their family. Lawrence was preceded in death by his loving wife, Helen, his parents Russell and Birdie Queen, his sisters Edna and Ruth, brother Jessie, Helen's parents Dietrich William and Anna Johanna Verbarg, sisters Frieda, Carol and Gertrude, and his nephew Steve Burt.
Lawrence is survived by his sister, Ruby Weiler; brother, Jim (and Patricia) Queen; brother-in-law, Thomas N. Howry; nieces, Donna Marie Burt, Marty and Dave Alexander, Marge Burnett, Millie and Gary Andreini; nephews, Donald and Darolyn Batz, Dave and Sue Batz, Jim DeLacy; great nieces and nephews, Evan Burt, Mike Batz, Wendy Batz, Mary Van Pelt, Dan Batz, Ruth Brown, John Batz; and many other beloved family members and friends.
