Albin "Al" Slakis, a resident of Palo Alto and Mountain View and formerly of Illinois, died on Oct. 30 in Palo Alto, California. He was 89.

Al was born on July 5, 1925, in Chicago, Illinois. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a hospital corpsman. Al later graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Food Technology and worked in both the pharmaceutical and food industries, including Abbott Labs and U.S. Army Natick Labs. After his retirement, he and his wife moved to Mountain View, California, to be close to their grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ann Slakis; his daughter, Susan (Slakis) Paul of Palo Alto and her husband John; his son, Tom Slakis of Danbury, Connecticut; and his two grandchildren, Emily Paul and John Michael Paul.
