Alexander W. Greenwood, 79, passed away Jan. 6, in Palo Alto, California, surrounded by his loving family: wife Barbara, son Alex and daughters Rebecca, Susannah and Brette. Alex, a native Houstonian, son of Dr. and Mrs. James Greenwood, Jr., graduated from St. John’s School in 1956, Rice University in 1961, served on active duty as an officer in the U.S. Navy and worked at First City National Bank in Houston. In 1973, he relocated to Palo Alto, and for the next 44 years he worked in Silicon Valley, holding a series of finance and management positions for high technology firms, most recently with Adobe Systems in San Jose. During this time he was also able to combine his three biggest passions: photography, world travel and time with his wife, which resulted in several award-winning photos from his trips to Africa, China, Europe and countless West Coast rodeos. He had just retired in September 2017, and in December contracted an extremely rare and aggressive form of leukemia. Until his last breath, Alex lived his life with honor, integrity, and courage. He is also survived by four grandchildren and his siblings living in Texas: Jim, Mary Grace, Harris, Nancy Riddle and Andy.
Alex was the person to whom I could always vent when times were challenging at Adobe. He was someone I always enjoyed chatting with and comparing notes on our time in our respective services, Navy and Air Force. I was stunned to learn of his passing, it is truly our loss and you shall be missed
Alex was a truly unique character. He was my customer, yet we always found ourselves moving quickly from business talk to our shared passion of travel, history, and favorite books every time we met. Though a private person, he spoke often of his wife and family. Our loss is heaven's gain. Such a terrific person.
