Barbara Thomas Hammond, 90, of La Mesa, Ca., and beloved wife of Sutton Hammond for 50 years, died peacefully with family by her side on February 14th at Sunrise Community in Bonita, California.

After graduating from Carleton College, Barbara became a lifelong advocate for the environment and a teacher at Woodside Elementary School in Woodside, California, from 1976-1981. She was known for her field trips to the ?grove? and teaching gifted students about future cities. She also did environmental consulting work for the Woodside Planning Commission.

Barbara, born in Billings, Montana, in 1922, loved the mountains, fly fishing, horseback riding, and birds of all kinds in her backyard. The couple was married for 50 years and had four children. They lived in Billings, Montana, Seattle, Washington, Woodside, California, and finally La Mesa, California until Sutton?s death at the age of 80 in 1997.

The couple is survived by four granddaughters, two grandsons, and their four children including Susan Hammond, Chula Vista, Ca.; Sally Hammond-Penland, Riverside, Ca.; Connie Hammond Weinsoff, Goleta, Ca.; and Thomas Sutton Hammond, Portland, Ct.
