Lasting Memories

Dorothy Haynes
Sept. 2, 1920-June 23, 2012
Florence, Oregon

Dorothy (Dottie) Haynes passed away on June 23, 2012, in Florence from complications of age. She was 81 years old.

Dottie and her husband Gene moved to Florence in 2004 to "return to the sea," as she put it. They lived for 10 years on their sailboat "Whither Thou" in and out of the San Francisco Bay Area until age and infirmities caught up with them. Dottie was not active in the community activities in Florence because of health but thoroughly enjoyed living in this delightful seaside town, and she and Gene attended the Eugene Symphony on a regular basis.

Dottie was born in Riverside, N.J., on Sept. 2, 1930, to Alvan and Mary Gerhard. She attended many grade schools throughout the east coast in the Depression area, and graduated from Highline High School, Seattle, Wash., in 1948. She briefly attended nursing school in Brookline Massachusetts. She married Mogens Norager in 1951 and they started their family of three daughters. He died in 1976.

After raising her three daughters Dottie was most active as a travel agent in California for over 17 years. She became manager of the Commercial department and through this position in Palo Alto, Calif., she met and married her second husband, Ronald (Gene) Haynes. They were married on the bow of their then home, the sloop "Whither Thou" in Ghiradelli Square, San Francisco, in December 1978.

Dottie was an accomplished writer, self-publishing two books and writing articles for some of the organizations to which she belonged in California. Before arthritis took over her hands, she proudly completed many needlecraft/cross-stitch projects.

Her first-born daughter Karen preceded her in death in 2005. She is survived by her husband Gene of 34 years whom she considered her soul mate, her two younger daughters Paula Kristine (Kris) and Greta Ann of San Francisco and Morgan Hill, Calif., respectively, three grandchildren, one great granddaughter and one great grandson, all of California. She is also survived by several stepchildren, grandchildren and great grandchildren, all extremely dear to her heart, as well as choice lifelong friends and buddies dating back to the 1950s.

At her request there is to be no service, she will be cremated and her ashes will be distributed in San Francisco Bay their beloved home prior to Florence. Burns's Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
