Lasting Memories

Dr. Peter Kasenchak
Oct. 17, 1934-May 29, 2014
Woodside, California

Peter's wonderful life came to an end when he passed away in his home on Thursday morning, May 29th, with his two sons Kevin and Kris caring for him.

Peter exemplified what it means to have a positive attitude and a commitment to serving others. It was most apparent through the last 14 months, as he did not miss a family function or opportunity to serve others as he fought pancreatic cancer. His most cherished friend, Geralyn Cole, was always by his side during that time.

Peter is survived by his two sons, Kevin and Kris, their wives Erin and Liza, and his four grandchildren, whom he adored.

Peter grew up in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, the only child of an immigrant family from Eastern Europe. He graduated from Hanover High School, put himself through college and graduated from the Temple University School of Dentistry in 1960.

He then joined the U.S. Navy as a dentist and was on active duty from 1960 to 1969. During that time, he was stationed on the USS Forrestal and spent a year in Antarctica.

He married the love of his life, Andrea Vogler, in New York on April 1, 1967. They created a life for themselves in Palo Alto, where Peter was a dentist for the Palo Alto Dental Group from 1969-2005.

He never remarried after losing Andrea to brain cancer on July 2, 1992.

After retirement, Peter's commitment to helping others increased. He was a board member for the Woodside Priory School and he served food for those in need three days a week at the St. Anthony's Padua Dining Room in Menlo Park, as well as acting as the chairman of the advisory council.

When Peter was not serving others, he enjoyed pursuing his passion for travel, scuba, and cooking.

Peter will be remembered for his kindness, his unselfish service to others, and the love he gave his many friends and family. He will not be forgotten but he will be missed tremendously.

PK you are and will always be greatly missed. I am so sorrowful that such a lengthy period passed prior to my attempt to touch base with you, and now I'm posthumous. Wow! Your ongoing exuberance, was exhilarating, and you made life a pleasure in living ones life to the fullest and, will always be remembered, and loved.

I was so saddened to learn of Peter's passing. I first met him as a patient. He was the best dentist ever! And his wonderful personality made it such a pleasure to visit the dentist. I also became friends with Peter through our involvement at Woodside Priory. He was such an ambassador for WPS and because of that my daughter attended high school at WPS. He was angel on earth and I know he is surrounded by the other angels now.

In 1979, as an 8-year old girl having just gotten in my permanent front teeth, they were knocked out and I was taken straight away to Dr. Kasenchak and his dentist chair where I spent many hours of my childhood over the years. Being his amazing self, he made that time happy and fun somehow and no matter how much it hurt, I always looked forward to being around his positive energy and exuberance for life. He would entertain me with jokes and by playing "the sound of music" in a Walkman placed on my belly (no ceiling video screens back then!) I will always hold him dear in my heart and remember him fondly. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

Whenever I walk into the PA Dental Clinic to this day I still always hear (and then miss) his "how are you this fine day?" He suggested the Woodside Priory for my son and it is something we and he will always be grateful for. He was a wonderful man and we were so lucky to know him. He will not be forgotten by our family!

Dr. Kasenchak was my dentist during my childhood, and after I ended up in Seattle after college, I would see him when I came home to visit. I would time my dental appointments when I came home. I will never forget on Christmas Eve one year, he came in to help my husband because he had a terrible toothache. His selflessness and kindness will always be remembered and is a model I aspire to but never seem to reach. He will always be warmly remembered. Thank you so much! Kim (Chase) McLeod

I loved PK's response, when asked how he was doing -- "Great! And getting better by the minute!" That, in very few words, captured his attitude. I've known Dr. Kasenchak, since I became his patient after moving to Palo Alto, from San Francisco, in 1978. It's not usual for people to look forward to their dentist appointments. He certainly had a way with administering Novacaine, almost painlessly. I was sad when he retired, but often bumped into him visiting his colleagues at Palo Alto Dental, wearing shorts, a tan, his and his wonderful smile. And at Roberts, or at the election booths when my husband and I moved to Wooside 20 years ago. Pete loved and nurtured many families -- his own, his friends, community, colleagues, and patients. God bless him? we'll miss him.

I always appreciated Pete's devotion to the Priory and his personal support of my time there. At long last, he and Andrea are reunited.

I loved being a part of the Priory community from 1989-2008, Dr Kaskenchak was not only my all time favorite dentist, but the pillar at every Priory event. You could always count on a warm smile, and pleasant conversation from him. May the road rise to meet you Dr. K.

Constantly thinking of others and equally balanced in his outlook for life, Peter was always at the service of others. He will be missed and is admired by all who crossed his path. True to his faith in God and in others, his life is an example to all.

Peter always had a kind, positive word to say and was an inspiration to everyone he met.

Pete was one of the first people to welcome me to Priory when I joined the faculty in 1993. We also shared conversations about the difficulties of losing a spouse to cancer, something we both had in common. Over the years I shared SO many laughs with Pete as we helped Father Martin and Brother Edward host their pizza parties and lobster dinners fund-raising events for the Priory. And whenever I arrived at school around 7:45, I could count on seeing Pete walking to his car after attending daily mass at the Priory, always in his burmuda shorts and loafers without sox. Style, grace, humor, a heart of gold--people don't get any better than Pete Kasenchak. He will be sorely missed, but hopefully is now eating lobsters or pizza in heaven with his wife and Brother Edward. God speed, Pete!
