Lasting Memories
Gary Granville Harmon
Dec. 21, 1937-Feb. 13, 2015
Atherton, California
Gary Granville Harmon, beloved husband and father, died on Friday, February 13, 2015 following a series of strokes. He was a native Californian, born to Irene and Granville Harmon of San Mateo in 1937. He lived on the Peninsula for most of his life and had been a resident of Atherton since 1977.
He was a graduate of San Mateo High School (1955), Stanford University (BSEE 1959), and Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration (MBA 1961). He combined his engineering and business education with a career in high-tech finance, notably as CFO for Avantek and Rambus.
In retirement, he enjoyed spending time with family, playing golf, taking classes, and going to theater, opera and the symphony. He and his wife traveled to many countries. Highlights include blue-footed boobies in the Galapagos Islands, Pisco sours in the Amazon, retracing the route of Darwin?s Beagle, and close encounters with Rwandan gorillas.
Golf was a lifelong pleasure. He particularly enjoyed traveling to Scotland with friends to explore golf?s birthplace ? and its whisky. In later years, he missed his single-digit handicap but enjoyed playing with his Tuesday golf group at the San Francisco Golf Club.
He enjoyed Continuing Education courses at Stanford, which allowed him to explore subjects he didn?t have a chance to study as an undergrad. He always appreciated his Stanford contacts, getting together with Theta Delts to watch the Big Game and attending the San Francisco Symphony with Les Amis des Arts.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Helen Howard Harmon; his daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter, Heather, John, and Arya Cochran; and his sister Gayle ?Sunny? Harmon Mills.
Friends are invited to a celebration of his life Saturday, April 18 at 2:00 at the San Francisco Golf Club. Please contact Helen or Heather for more details.
