Lasting Memories
George N. Browning
April 21, 1926-March 22, 2014
Palo Alto, California
George Browning was a long time resident of Palo Alto; he died while staying with his son in Atascadero, Calif. George was born in San Francisco, and served at the end of WWII. He then attended the University of California at Berkeley. Upon graduation he was hired by Varian Corporation where he worked for 37 years.
Upon retirement George took on many civic activities in Palo Alto. He volunteered at the Palo Alto Police Department for 20 years. He was a neighborhood leader in Charleston Gardens, organizing the e-mail tree and block parties. He also worked with the Emergency Preparedness group and Palo Alto Neighborhoods.
George is survived by his partner of 28 years Jean Wilcox, his brother Pete, his son Curtis (Anna), two step-daughters Kina Sullivan (John) and Pam Kaiser (Ron), grandchildren, step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren. George led an interesting life; he loved people and got on well with everyone. Needless to say we will all miss him very much.
I am a voice from the distant past. My brother Don and I grew up with George and Peter Browning in the '30s and early '40s. I am so saddened that I found George a month after his death. I was hoping to reestablish our old links. Many dinners and picnics. Playing in the quarry near their home, etc.
While at Varian Associates I always welcomed a phone call from George who would sing a lovely ballad before asking for help with important Varian business. Those songs made me want to do anything to further a good outcome for George and Varian. When he retired I missed him and when I read his Letters to the Editor in the Palo Alto papers over the years I realized over and over what a good man he was. I'm sorry he had to leave but happy to have met him.
