Lasting Memories

John Henry Ullman
1931-Feb. 4, 2007
Palo Alto, California

John Henry Ullman, a resident of Portola Valley for many years, died Feb. 4 in Palo Alto of natural causes. He was 76.

Mr. Ullman was born in Nuremburg, Germany, and fled from that country with his family just months before World War II. His family sought refuge in Sweden and moved to San Francisco when he was 9.

Mr. Ullman grew up in San Francisco and lived in Portola Valley for many years before moving to the Hyatt Classic Residence in Palo Alto. He was a retired manufacturers' representative for home furnishings, continuing a business started by his father. In the 1970s, he was a counselor at Fort Help in San Francisco in the realm of human sexuality. He also assisted Bernie Zilbergeld in his writing of the book, "Male Sexuality."

Mr. Ullman enjoyed good food and playing the piano; he excelled at bridge, and was an avid supporter of the San Francisco Symphony, say family members.

He is survived by his children, Steven Ullman and Sharon Ullman Ford; sister Ruth Pohlman; and two granddaughters. His wife, Sondra, preceded him in death.
