Lasting Memories
Jose Baez
March 27, 1939-May 6, 2026
Redwood City, California
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jose Mendoza Baez, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend whose life was defined by hard work, resilience, and unwavering dedication to his family.
Jose was born on March 27, 1939, in Aguililla, Michoacan Mexico. At the age of 17, he met the love of his life, Beatriz Barragan. They were married in October of 1958 and together created the foundation for a strong and loving family.
In 1963, Jose immigrated to the United States in search of greater opportunities for his family. As a child, he learned to become a skilled baker and brought his trade to Redwood City, where he proudly opened his bakery on Middlefield Road in 1981. Through years of dedication and hard work – with his family at his side – he earned the admiration and respect of many within the community.
Jose was known as a stern and quiet man, someone who spoke meaningfully, when he did. Though reserved in nature, he was deeply admired by those who knew him. He constantly looked for opportunities to pass down wisdom to his many grandchildren and family members.
Nature and the outdoors were at the heart of Jose’s life. In his younger years, he enjoyed swimming and cliff diving into the rivers of Mexico. He also loved to fish and hunt for quail, underlining his interest in wildlife. No matter how many years passed, his heart always remained connected to his beloved hometown of Aguililla. Every April, he looked forward to returning home to pick and enjoy Pitallas, one of his favorite fruits. He also loved Pinzanes and fresh corn, simple foods that brought him comfort and reminded him of home.
Jose’s garden, which became one of his greatest joys, reflected those passions. His yard was filled with orange, tangerine, and guava trees, along with a beautiful mixture of flowers and plants that he carefully nurtured over the years. He spent countless hours caring for it and found peace sitting outside, watching and feeding the birds while enjoying the beauty around him. His garden became well known in the neighborhood, and he was honored by the City of Redwood City with a plaque recognizing it as one of the best gardens in the area — an achievement he so cherished.
One of the greatest blessings of his final years was becoming a great-grandfather to four beautiful great-grandchildren within the past year, something that filled him with immense pride and happiness. Jose will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his beloved wife, Beatriz, his six children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, all whose lives were touched by his strength, quiet wisdom, and enduring love. His legacy will continue to live on through the family he cherished and the countless memories he leaves behind.
