Lasting Memories
Margie Blanche Herman
Sept. 25, 1927-April 18, 2011
Mountain View, California
Margie Blanche Herman, a Los Angeles native and longtime resident of Mountain View, died April 18, 2011, following a stroke. She was 83 years old.
Margie will be remembered for her boundless energy and enthusiasm. After a long career in medical social work, Margie retired in 1994 to pursue her passions for world literature, travel, and food. Her extensive travels took her to more than 40 countries, from the Galapagos Islands to Vietnam but as a Francophile, France, and in particular, Paris remained her favorite. Margie graduated from UC Berkeley with a Bachelor's degree in sociology and a Masters degree in social work and worked for many years treating patients and their families as part of the cancer treatment team at the Stanford Medical Center in Palo Alto. Margie also lectured at the Stanford School of Social Work and co-designed a program to assist medical students in meeting the psychosocial needs of chronically ill patients.
In retirement, Margie audited world literature classes at Stanford, discussed books with professors over coffee, practiced English with foreign students, ushered for concerts, took in a museum or art movie, and then went folk dancing at 11 pm at night, sometimes all in the same day! She had a remarkable gift for relating to and keeping in touch with far-flung relatives and friends she met through work, travels, and her array of interests.
Margie is survived by her three sons Jeremy, Matthew, and Joel, their wives, and granddaughters Maya, Tara, Jasleen and Milena. She will be missed by her family, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends, nearby and around the world. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to a charity of your interest.
