Longtime Woodside resident Mary McCall passed away on September 30 after a brief illness.

Mary was born in Irvington, New Jersey to Anne and Alfred Gregory. She graduated from the Madeira School and attended Columbia and Wellesley. After her marriage she completed her BA in English Literature at Whitman College in Washington.

She married Richard McCall in 1956, a marriage that lasted until her death. They lived in Richland, Washington; Lund, Sweden; and Boston, Massachussets before moving to California in 1964. She lived in Woodside for the last 56 years. After her children were mostly grown, she worked as a freelance court reporter until her retirement.

Mary was a lifelong student of languages. She studied Latin, French, Russian, and Hebrew. She belonged for years to an internet group that translated Russian novels. Mary was a lover of classical music. She played the piano and enjoyed opera and concerts, especially Bach. Mary also loved dogs and had a succession of much-loved standard poodles throughout her life.

She is survived by her husband Richard, her three children: Anne Kincaid, James, and Margaret Ginty, her sister Rowan Shipman, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
