"The Belle of the Ball"
Born Merry Esplin Davenport to parents John and Beth Davenport on May 19th, 1938 in Atherton, California. Merry, the loving wife of Al and dedicated mother of four sons, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 29th, 2018 in Tucson, Arizona. She is survived by her adoring sons Chuck, Jeff, Adam and Matt as well as her sister Sally, brothers Lincoln and Peter and grandson Thomas. While Merry had more than enough on her hands raising her four boys, she loved being a librarian and adored reading to children. Merry attended Menlo-Atherton High where she was crowned Senior Ball Queen. While Merry did not obsess over such titles, she wore the crown with pride and humility. After high school she attended the University of Missouri where she received her BA in 1960. Never the type to smile out of obligation, when it did happen, she lit up the room. Merry was an animal lover and had a special affinity for Golden Retrievers. She possessed a spunk and determination that could not be equaled. While she excelled in many aspects of her life, both personal and professional, her legacy as a mother, grandmother, wife, sister, daughter, mentor and educator will live long past her physical existence on this planet. Merry will be remembered, missed and loved by the countless souls that she encountered during her life. The world is a better place for her loving and devoted existence and her absence will be deeply felt by all who knew her.
Merry was my roommate at Stephens College in 1956-57. I left Stephens after my first year, and totally lost touch with Merry. It was obvious she was crazy about Al at the time. I was recently looking up "lost friends", and came upon her obituary. So sorry to hear she's gone - would have liked to get in touch again.
