Lasting Memories

Susan Catherine Kazul
Aug. 5, 1940-June 3, 2014
Palo Alto, California

Susan (Suzy) Catherine McGlaughlin Kazul, a caring and compassionate nurse, loving mother, grandmother, wife and loyal friend, passed away peacefully in her home in Palo Alto, California, on Tuesday, June 3, at the age of 73. She was surrounded by her husband, three children and four sisters.

Born on August 5, 1940, Suzy was the second eldest of the seven children of Dr. Nicholas "Doyle" and Charlotte McGlaughlin of Wyandotte, Michigan. In 1962, she received her nursing degree from the University of Michigan, then worked as an registered nurse in both hospital and community settings. In 1968, she married Stanley Charles Kazul. They settled in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, and soon started a family. Susan's family always came first and brought her the most joy in life. She delighted in creating special family traditions which will continue to be celebrated by future generations. She was generous of heart and possessed a strong sense of style and self. Susan was an avid golfer and a patron of the arts throughout her life. When she and her husband retired in Palo Alto in 1997, she continued these passions and volunteered at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation Community Health Resource Center as a Nurse Health Educator.

Susan is survived by her husband of 46 years, Stanley Kazul; her three children, Charlotte Van Wagner of Sacramento, California, Jennifer Saavedra (Raul) of Tiburon, California, and Timothy Kazul (Julia) of Mill Valley, California; and her four grandchildren, Andrew Van Wagner, Alex and Sadie Saavedra, and Maxine Kazul. She also has four surviving sisters, Mollie Weber (Tom) of Saugatuck, Michigan; Kathy McCord (Rob) of San Rafael, California; Janie Zemba (Richard) of Dearborn, Michigan; and Annie Sexton (Jim) of Eugene, Oregon. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Patrick and Michael McGlaughlin.

I worked with Susan's husband Stan for several years in the 1980's. He was a partner, I was a paralegal. She and I met at a wedding reception for a co-worker -- we were wearing the same outfit!! I'll never forget how incredibly gracious she was and the laughs we shared. My heart goes out to Stan and the entire family.
