Lasting Memories
Wallace Kean
1927-Nov. 11, 2008
Menlo Park, California
Wallace (Wally) Kean, 81, a resident of Menlo Park, died Nov. 11.
Born in Bremerton, Wash., he enjoyed fishing, hunting and boating as a child. After a service in the U.S. Navy he successfully parlayed the G.I. Bill, with hard work and a series of jobs, into a degree in civil engineering from the University of Washington. Later, taking flying lessons and buying a private plane, he became a commercial pilot for United Air Lines and Pan American World Airways. He flew a variety of aircraft and achieved the rank of check captain. He also combined his love of boating and engineering skills to build a 50-foot vessel.
A broad knowledge of subjects, especially in geography and history, made him an engaging conversationalist, his family recalls. He was kind and genuine, diplomatic, and always ready to lend a helping hand.
He is survived by his wife, Gudny, and many friends. Donations in his name may be made to Second Harvest Food Bank, 1051 Bing Street, San Carlos, CA 94070-5320.
